Projects and activities
The functioning of Pichimahuida resembles the functioning of a very small biosphere reserve, an established principle that integrates people and some of their activities into the life of natural ecosystems, and delimits zones dedicated exclusively to nature where it can develop unharmed. The activities include the following:
Ecosystem:
‣ Fauna
‣ Birdlife
‣ Flora
‣ Soil
‣ Geology
‣ Climate
‣ Glaciers
History:
‣ Publications
‣ Facts and
stories
Information:
‣ Legal for PPAs
‣ Environmental
& ecosystemic
This approach allows people and nature to live together
in peace and with respect for the land.
A biosphere reserve would normally comprise:
- A legally protected core area, devoted to long-term protection;
- A buffer zone where non-conservation activities are prohibited;
- A transition area, where approved human practices are permitted, including housing etc.
Biosphere reserves are created
“to promote and demonstrate a balanced
relationship between humans and the biosphere”.
People are an integral component.
The reserve conserves examples
of characteristics of a natural region.
It’s an area where model programmes
for land use are developed and tested.
It contributes to conservation of biodiversity,
wetlands and cultural heritage, in particular
traditional land practices.
