As the valley is geologically young there are virtually no endemic plant species.
The vegetation cover suffered deeply from the colonisation of the region in the first part of the XX century. Deliberate fires in the valley of 1939 and 1955 completely destroyed the ancient forest ecosystem. The vegetable cover had little chances to recover to its pre-fire state. At present it is a post-fire vegetable cover, a novel ecosystem subject to pampanisation (desertification).

The area has several types of native orchids (M. decurrens and M. espinosa).
Plant neurobiology is of particular interest for the project.
As the Northern ice field and, in particular, the Leones glacier is melting fast, many plants face extinction.

Como el valle es geológicamente joven, prácticamente no hay especies de plantas endémicas.
La cubierta vegetal sufrió profundamente de la colonización de la región en la primera parte del siglo XX. Los incendios deliberados en el valle de 1939 y 1955 destruyeron completamente el ecosistema forestal antiguo. La cubierta vegetal tenía pocas posibilidades de recuperarse a su estado previo al fuego. Ahora es una cubierta vegetal posterior al fuego, un ecosistema novedoso sujeto a pampanización (desertificación).

La neurobiología vegetal es de interés especial para el proyecto.
Como el campo de hielo Norte y, en particular, el glaciar Leones se está derritiendo rápidamente, muchas plantas enfrentan la extinción .
